Company History

Ian Kirk and Mike McCabe, of AKZO Chemicals (UK) Ltd, formed AKM in 1990. The company commenced trading in 1991 as exclusive distributor for AKZO Chemicals range of rubber chemicals in the UK.

The company was based at Woolston, Warrington with a total staff of 10 former AKZO Chemical (UK) Ltd employees, with an initial turnover on sales of approximately £3,000,000.

In 1992 AKM Packaging Ltd was created at Newton-le-Willows to produce dispersions, blends and re-packaging of rubber chemicals. Peter Worrell was appointed Production Director and Ray Stinson, Technical Director and both became shareholders of both companies.

The Chemicals distribution business has been successful and in 1995 when AKZO Chemicals created a joint venture with Monsanto viz. ‘Flexsys’, AKM was appointed exclusive distributor to the UK market, and continues also with AKZO Nobel and AKZO PQ.

The distribution business joined the production business at Newton-le-Willows in 1995 and the companies were amalgamated as AKM in 1997.

From January 1st 1998 AKM was appointed UK distributor for Schill and Seilacher Gmbh & Co. To facilitate the increase in business AKM Ltd, distribution, moved to larger premises at Lea Green, St Helens, from where it operated until May 2000. The production facility continues successfully at the Newton-le-Willows site.

The distribution company now trades with several world-class suppliers, as well as Flexsys, AKZO and Schill and Seilacher,
such as :-
Albion Process Chemicals
BASF
Umicore
H. Foster and Company (Stearines)
LeFrant
Rohm & Haas
Degussa
Schenectady (from November 2005)
DSM Elastomers (from July 2006)

The company serves as a “one stop” supplier of high quality chemicals, which can be delivered on time, every time.

In 1999 the company was taken over by a French Company and was then, AKM (a division of Safic Alcan UK Ltd). This increased availability of the global market to AKM.

In May 2000 after a fire, which wiped out the Lea Green premises, the company moved its head office back to Woolston, Warrington. Although the fire wiped out all our stock, we managed to be up and running again in a few days. The warehouse and distribution side of the business has now been out-sourced, but the operation of the business is completely back on track.

The company employs about 30 people and has a sales turnover of approximately £12,000,000

The company changed name again in 2003 to Safic–Alcan UK Limited.

Safic Alcan UK Limited is now the UK division of the Safic Alcan Group, with divisions throughout Europe and the world. Safic Alcan is a major chemical distributor specialising in the rubber, plastics, adhesives, coatings and fine chemicals markets. In addition to representing the companies mentioned above, Safic Alcan UK Limited also supplies a wide range of Safic Alcan's own quality products.
